Start here: there is no casino called «Microgaming». Microgaming was the Isle of Man software house that launched the first online casino software in 1994; in 2022 it sold its whole games catalogue and its Quickfire distribution arm to Games Global, and in 2024 the original company renamed itself Apricot Investments. A «Microgaming casino» in 2026 is a casino carrying Games Global content. The famous $1 and $5 entries are one group’s promotion — Casino Rewards — not a Canadian standard, and they buy chances, not cash.

There is no casino called Microgaming

It is worth saying plainly, because the search term hides it. Microgaming was a software company, not a casino. It was founded on the Isle of Man in 1994, and its own corporate site put the claim like this: the company had «developed and launched the world’s first true online casino software». It never took your deposit, never held your balance and never paid your withdrawal. It built the games, and licensed them to the operators who did all of that.

So when a Canadian types «Microgaming casino», what they are looking for is a casino whose lobby is filled with Microgaming-built games — Mega Moolah, Thunderstruck II, Immortal Romance, Avalon. That is a perfectly sensible thing to look for. It is just not a brand you can sign up to, and any page that presents «Microgaming Casino» as an operator with its own welcome bonus is inventing one.

The Microgaming logo

The Microgaming mark, shown here to identify the software company this guide is about. Microgaming, Apricot Investments and Games Global are not connected to this site and have not endorsed it.

What happened in 2022, and why the studio name still shows up

In 2022 Microgaming sold the lot. Its entire games portfolio and its Quickfire distribution business went to Games Global Limited: more than 3,000 games, the progressive jackpot network that carries Mega Moolah and WowPot, and the commercial relationships with over 800 licensed operator clients. Two years later, in 2024, the company that had been Microgaming rebranded to Apricot Investments and moved on to platform software and technology services.

That is why lobbies are inconsistent about the name. A tile might say Microgaming, or Games Global, or both, or name the individual studio that actually built it — Fortune Factory Studios, Just For The Win, Foxium, Triple Edge Studios, Area Vegas. All of those are part of the same distribution network today. As of August 2026 Games Global described that network as more than 30 in-house and partnered studios with a portfolio of over 1,400 proprietary games. If you see the old Microgaming logo on a 2026 lobby, it is heritage branding, not a live corporate relationship.

How Canada regulates this, province by province

The Toronto skyline and the CN Tower at sunset, seen across the lake

There is no national Canadian online casino licence, and that single fact explains most of the confusion in this market. Gambling is regulated provincially, and the provinces have gone in different directions.

Ontario has run an open, competitive regulated market since April 2022. Two bodies share the work: the AGCO registers and supervises operators, and iGaming Ontario, its subsidiary, conducts and manages the market commercially by signing an operating agreement with each registered operator. By early 2026 more than 80 operators were registered. Playing on a registered Ontario site means segregated player funds, lab-tested games, identity verification at sign-up and a provincial route for disputes.

Alberta is the second province to open. Its regulated market launched on 13 July 2026, with the AGLC as regulator and the Alberta iGaming Corporation as the conduct-and-manage body — the same two-body shape as Ontario. Twenty-two operator sites went live on day one, and around fifty operators had completed registration by launch.

Québec has taken the opposite route: Loto-Québec runs Espacejeux itself and the province does not license private operators. Everywhere else, the provincial lottery corporation runs the official site and private operators reach Canadians from offshore, typically under a Kahnawake or foreign licence. Those licences are real and verifiable, but they are not your province, and your province will not adjudicate your complaint.

The $1 entry, and what a dollar actually buys

The one-dollar deposit is the single most-searched thing in Canadian online casino, and it belongs to one group. Casino Rewards — a loyalty network operating since 2000 with roughly two dozen member casinos, all built on Microgaming content — publishes the offer on its own site as Zodiac Casino: 80 free chances to win $1 million for just $1. That is the source of the entire «$1 casino» category in Canada.

Here is the part the banner leaves out. The chances are spins, not cash, and third-party reviews of the offer describe what they turn into: winnings are credited as bonus funds carrying 200x wagering, and the deposit has to be made within seven days of registration. Reviewers also disagree about the per-spin value — some quote about ten cents a spin, others twenty to twenty-five — which is exactly the kind of number to confirm in the operator’s own terms rather than in a summary. Either way, a dollar buys a short run of small-stake spins with a jackpot live in the background. It is a cheap look at a lobby, not a plan. The full terms are here.

The $5 entry, and the minimum that is not the minimum

The five-dollar tier is broader and, for most people, more honest. Casino Rewards lists Captain Cooks Casino at 100 free chances for just $5 on the same page as the Zodiac offer, and third-party Canadian reviews list JackpotCity as giving 215 free spins on a $5 deposit. Above that sits the ten-dollar tier — Yukon Gold at 150 chances for $10, Cosmo at 150 for $10.

The catch is not the bonus, it is the cashier. Canadian review sites repeatedly find that a site advertising a C$5 minimum will not actually let you move C$5 through Interac, where the real floor is often C$10 to C$20. The advertised minimum is a marketing number for the cheapest method on the list; the number that matters is the one your method shows at the cashier. We go through it here.

The games you will actually be playing

The reason this catalogue has lasted is Mega Moolah, launched in 2006. In October 2015 a player at Betway won €17,879,645 (£13,209,300) on it, a payout certified by Guinness World Records at the time as the largest ever from an online slot. That single result built the entire «progressive jackpot» category in Canada. One correction worth carrying, though: the game the free chances actually run on varies, and it is not always Mega Moolah. Canadian reviews of the Zodiac $1 offer in 2026 describe the 80 spins running on Mega Money Wheel, while the $5 JackpotCity offer is usually described on Atlantean Treasures Mega Moolah. The qualifying game is named in the offer terms; read it there.

Around it sits a deep back catalogue with published long-run RTPs: Immortal Romance at 96.86%, Thunderstruck II at 96.65%, Book of Oz at 96.5%, 9 Masks of Fire at 96.24%. Read those as what they are — averages over millions of spins, not a forecast for your evening. The house edge is the design, not a defect. More on the catalogue and the jackpot networks.

Bonuses come in four shapes, and only one is cash

Across the Casino Rewards group and the wider market the offers reduce to four forms. A match bonus multiplies your deposit — Grand Mondial at 100% up to $250, Luxury at 100% up to $150, Golden Tiger at 100% up to $100, all published on the group’s own site. Free chances are fixed-stake spins on a jackpot game, which is what the $1 and $5 offers are. Free spins are the same thing on an ordinary slot — Quatro advertises 700 of them across your first seven days. And a no-deposit offer gives you something before you pay, which is rarer and smaller than the internet suggests.

All four are subject to playthrough, and playthrough is where the value goes. A 200x requirement on a promotional deposit is not the same animal as a 30x requirement on a match bonus, and the two get quoted side by side as though they were. The arithmetic is on the bonuses page.

What «new» means in Canada in 2026

Two different things get called new. There are newly registered operators — Ontario passed eighty registrations, and Alberta’s July 2026 launch created a second regulated shop window overnight. And there is new content: in August 2026 Games Global launched Jackpot Madness, a progressive network with four prize tiers across six pots, joining Mega Moolah, WowPot, King Millions, Lotsaloot and Mzansi Moolah.

A genuinely new site is worth a careful look rather than an instant deposit, because newness cuts both ways: a fresh licence and a modern cashier are good, and no track record at all is not. What to check first.

Five checks before you put money anywhere

Two people going through a paper form at a table

First, find the licence and read whose it is: an Ontario site names its operating entity and its AGCO registration, and an offshore one names a Kahnawake or foreign licence number you can look up. Second, check the cashier minimum for your own method before you trust the headline. Third, read the playthrough multiple and what it applies to — deposit, bonus, or deposit plus bonus, because they are wildly different. Fourth, verify your identity straight away; every licensed casino runs a KYC check and doing it at sign-up is what stops a first withdrawal stalling. Fifth, set your deposit and time limits in the account settings on day one, when it costs you nothing to be sensible.

None of that makes gambling profitable, and nothing here should be read as saying it does. These games are built with a mathematical margin for the house, which is precisely why the studio can publish a 96% RTP as a selling point.

Playing within limits

Decide the amount before you open the cashier, treat it as spent the moment you deposit it, and stop when it is gone. Do not deposit again to recover a loss — that one habit does more damage than any bonus term. If the play has stopped being entertainment, help is free, confidential and available around the clock: ConnexOntario at 1-866-531-2600, which answers in 170 languages, Alberta at 1-866-332-2322, and in Québec Gambling: Help and Referral at 1-800-461-0140, a bilingual service with an online chat.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an online casino actually called «Microgaming Casino»?

No. Microgaming was a software company, not a casino. It was founded on the Isle of Man in 1994 and its own corporate site described it as having «developed and launched the world’s first true online casino software». When Canadians search for a Microgaming casino they mean a casino that runs Microgaming-built games — and since 2022 those games belong to Games Global.

What happened to Microgaming in 2022?

Microgaming sold its entire games portfolio and its Quickfire distribution business to Games Global Limited — more than 3,000 games, the progressive jackpot network behind Mega Moolah and WowPot, and the relationships with over 800 licensed operator clients. In 2024 the original company rebranded to Apricot Investments. So the studio name on a lobby tile may still read Microgaming, but the company distributing it is Games Global.

Which Canadian casinos really take a $1 deposit?

The $1 entry in Canada is a Casino Rewards promotion, not an industry standard. On the group’s own site the offer is listed as Zodiac Casino: 80 free chances to win $1 million for just $1. Its siblings sit higher — Captain Cooks at $5 for 100 chances, Yukon Gold at $10 for 150. Our $1 deposit page sets out the wagering terms attached to it.

Do the 80 chances for $1 mean I can win $1 million with a dollar?

In principle the jackpot is live on every qualifying spin, which is exactly why the offer works as marketing. In practice the money is not cash: third-party reviews of the offer describe the spins being credited as bonus funds carrying 200x wagering, so the realistic outcome of a dollar is a short run of small-stake spins. Read the operator’s own terms before you deposit, not an affiliate summary.

Is online casino play legal in Canada?

It depends on your province. Ontario has run an open regulated market since April 2022, with the AGCO registering operators and iGaming Ontario holding the operating agreements; by early 2026 more than 80 operators were registered. Alberta opened its own market on 13 July 2026 under AGLC and the Alberta iGaming Corporation. Québec offers Loto-Québec’s Espacejeux and does not license private operators. Elsewhere, private sites run on foreign or Kahnawake licences.

What is the minimum age?

Nineteen in Ontario, British Columbia and most provinces; eighteen in Alberta, Manitoba and Québec. The age is set by your province, not by the casino, and a regulated site will verify it at sign-up.

Which Games Global slots are worth knowing?

Mega Moolah is the one with the record — a player at Betway won €17,879,645 on it in October 2015, certified by Guinness World Records at the time as the largest online slot payout. Beyond it, Immortal Romance is quoted at 96.86% RTP, Thunderstruck II at 96.65%, Book of Oz at 96.5% and 9 Masks of Fire at 96.24%. Those are long-run averages published by the studio, not a forecast for your session.
